What she went through: God promised Abraham that he would become a great nation, yet Sarah remained unable to conceive. Out of deep desperation, societal pressure, and a desire to see the promise fulfilled, she resorted to a common legal custom of the time: offering her Egyptian maidservant, Hagar, to Abraham to bear a child on her behalf. This choice led to immediate domestic heartbreak, jealousy, and bitter resentment between the two women once Hagar conceived. “Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children...” (Genesis 16:1) and “The Lord visited Sarah as he had said... And Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age...” (Genesis 21:1–2).
