Onanβs older brother, Er, died childless. According to ancient Near Eastern custom (which later became law in Deuteronomy 25:5β6), it was the duty of the surviving brother to marry the widow (Tamar) and father a child. The firstborn child of that union would legally inherit the dead brother's name, property, and lineage so the family line wouldn't die out.
