Public Mocking: They stood outside the workspace and openly ridiculed the builders, saying things like, "What are those feeble Jews doing?... If even a fox climbs up on it, he will break down their wall of stones!" (Nehemiah 4:2-3). This is classic "trolling" meant to make a target feel incompetent.
Fake News & Doxxing: When mocking didn't work, they resorted to spreading viral lies. They sent an unsealed letter (meaning anyone could read it along the way, much like a public social media post) claiming that Nehemiah was planning a violent rebellion against the king (Nehemiah 6:5-7). It was a deliberate attempt to ruin his reputation and get him canceled by the authorities.
The Victim of Global Gossip & Trolling
Mass Public Humiliation: In the Psalms, David frequently talks about how people gathered in groups just to talk trash about him. He writes, "Those who sit at the gate mock me, and I am the song of the drunkards" (Psalm 69:12).
Relentless Trolling: When David was at his lowest point, fleeing for his life from his own son Absalom, a man named Shimei followed him along the hillside. Shimei threw stones at him, kicked up dirt, and yelled curses, shouting, "Get out, get out, you man of blood, you worthless scoundrel!" (2 Samuel 16:5-8). It was the ancient equivalent of leaving hundreds of hateful comments on someone's profile during a personal crisis.
